Strategic Off-Sites

Category:

The strategic off-site is the one meeting that the CEO (or the division leader) owns. Why? They are the captain of the ship and have to set course for what they are to go, when they are to arrive and how to measure their overall success in the journey.

We enable the senior leadership team to convene in a purposeful manner to set the course for the organization. Our off-site strategy sessions help set a course, design the steps, and the metrics to measure the results. Expectations for the off-site run higher than for a typical executive session because it is usually the only opportunity the top management team has to explore strategic issues in depth for more than one day.

The scope of a strategy off-site is broader than the quarterly management team reviews. First, we discuss with the senior leader, who owns the offsite, their goals and current vision for their organization. From this, we help shape the offsite activities that enable leaders to participate and design the strategy. In an ever-changing environment, we identify what business the company should be in. We also look at more-focused questions like how to build new core competencies. Instead of concentrating on their individual functional areas, each leader must take an organization-wide perspective and synthesize information drawn from disparate areas of the firm. And unlike operations-oriented meetings, whose objectives are limited and whose function is primarily tactical, our strategy off-sites deal with information and issues that are often ambiguous or speculative, which will enable executives to shape the vision and direction for their areas…aligning the organization to the overall goals.

A strategic off-site’s success is largely determined by what happens before it convenes. To make sure the meeting generates tangible results, we need three things. First, answer the most basic questions: Who should be there? Talking about what, when, and why? Second, compile and distribute relevant data. Third, create a structure for the meeting that will compel progress and engagement.

Spending 2 or more days a year having well-designed strategy conversations together will benefit your organization tremendously. Within a few years, you will become good at revealing, discussing, and resolving strategic issues, not just at your off-sites, but every time team members meet.

Price is the per day fee. Most strategic off-sites are 2 days.
